Baited Blade is a classical fencing club. We concentrate on the three basic weapons that developed in the 19th century: the foil, sabre and epee. Our approach differs from the sport version of the activity in that we practice fencing as a martial art as opposed to a game. Like many classical clubs, we also offer some historical weapons, namely smallsword, rapier (with or without an accompanying dagger), longsword and dussack. We also work with the cane and great stick.

The Meaning of Baited Blade

Baited Blade came about over twenty years ago as a small fencing group in a tiny room in the basement of an apartment complex. The club eventually moved so a new name was certainly needed; it had been going by the name of the apartment complex but having moved, the current name was no longer appropriate. A lot of thought went in to the name; it had to completely represent our unique approach. A “Name the club” contest was instituted but got little response. Still, a new name had to be given and that is a story in itself.

After much consideration, Baited Blade was eventually chosen for three major reasons. First, it is recognizable and distinctive with its alliteration and all. Secondly, learning and personal development are our major goals; for a weapon to be baited (or bated), it is to be used as a practice or training weapon. Finally, the idea of a bated weapon symbolizes not only dedication to study but an understanding of a peaceful, cooperative environment where egos are left at the door. The spelling reflects a double entendre (baited is not only a lesser known spelling for bated but also might indicate the complex and strategic nature of foil with its deception and subtlety) which indicates once again that we are more than we seem.

That is Baited Blade. Come and try us! All are welcome to join Baited Blade in the pursuit of the sword in all its mystery and grandeur!
